Ability alone is not the whole picture.
VS1 reads capability, growth momentum and core vitality separately. Inamori’s formula inspires the distinction; its multiplication is not a VS1 calculation.
Established disciplines · New application
VS1 does not claim to invent direct observation, anchored judgement or repeated review; it brings those disciplines together for a specific management problem.
The application is new. The disciplines behind direct observation, structured judgement and repeated review are not.
VS1 reads capability, growth momentum and core vitality separately. Inamori’s formula inspires the distinction; its multiplication is not a VS1 calculation.
mini-CEX brings direct observation, written anchors, feedback and repeated encounters into view. VS1 adapts these operating disciplines to workplace development.
Shared questions, evidence rules and anchors make the basis of a judgement visible. Structure lets disagreement be located; it does not make every rating identical.
These are design precedents. Their research findings do not validate VS1; VS1 must establish its own evidence.
Method sources and boundaries
Three distinct sources inform the design. The detailed study context is available below.
Applied: Visible ability alone does not explain a work result. VS1 reads capability, growth momentum and core vitality separately.
Boundary: The numerical ranges, multiplication and original formula are not validation evidence or scoring rules for VS1.
Source: Kazuo Inamori, Kyocera Philosophy, “The Result of Our Life or Work = Attitude × Effort × Ability.”
Applied: Observation of real work, an accountable observer, written anchors, dialogue and repeated sampling.
In a 2003 study across 21 internal-medicine training programmes, 316 evaluators recorded 1,228 encounters involving 421 residents. Ratings improved across the first year; this alone does not establish that mini-CEX caused the improvement.
Sources: Norcini, Blank, Arnold & Kimball (1995); Norcini, Blank, Duffy & Fortna (2003), Annals of Internal Medicine. These are method precedents, not validation evidence for VS1.
Applied: Important judgements need a defined structure. Questions, evidence rules and anchors make their basis inspectable.
Revised meta-analytic estimates place operational validity at around .42 for structured interviews and .19 for unstructured interviews. These figures concern personnel selection; they do not transfer to VS1 workplace observation.

Established disciplines can guide the design. VS1 must still establish its own evidence.
Structure does not remove disagreement. It creates the conditions for disagreement to be located and measured.
